Grounded in science and contextualized in thousands of years of mankind’s history, there is just no other way to put it: sexual activity and the pursuit of it under the LGBTQ definition is an anomaly in the animal kingdom.

My 14-year-old son lives in a high school context that looks different than my own in the early 1990s. You are an inspiration, I’m sure, to everyone sitting on a silent powder keg of hate but scared to let it explode into daylight.

Seuss the scapegoat for evil, yet a book that promotes sexual identity to toddlers an preschoolers, not? As much as I would love to promote children's books about different identities, I cannot in good conscience support this book. I'll let you finish off the potential title - and if you think I'm being ludicrous, check out the movie "Idiocracy" - it's terribly painful to watch, but you'll find some valid reference points). packed with the type of positive messages I love sharing with my kids and I want all kids to hear: "Brave, creative, and strong. And as far as text goes, there are a few big disappointments in here: asexual or aromantic is ignored in favour of ally as the word for the letter A (although asexual is included in the back glossary); the definition for bi in the main section and glossary says "boys and girls" and "two genders"--how much longer do we have to keep shouting that the identity bi can be and often is inclusive of non-binary people?

Her insight and honest approach to LGBTQIA+ education has helped millions of kids and adults understand who they are.The introductory "annotation" says, "Just like the original words, these new ones should be part of our basic vocabulary so they can be properly understood and embraced. Thank you to NetGalley and Quirk Books for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. As a teacher and a queer person, I think it's important that books like these exist and that kids in their early years learn about diversity and normalize it. I think over the last five years or so, there’s definitely been an increase in LGBTQ+ children’s books, but it’s still not an incredibly robust space,” Amer said.

Ashley Mardell, originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, blogs about her daily life on her YouTube channel. Update (2021): I have learned that a newer board book edition of this book has been updated to start with "A is for Aro and Ace," so I have updated my rating from 1 star to 2. This is a great twist on the normal ABCs, and done in the style of Battle Bunny, with an original ABC book, modified. So many are too afraid to make their opinions known because of being branded a “fill in the blank” phobe, and bringing harm to their families through vengeful retaliation. For many kids, this will encourage important conversations about identity and sexuality, as well as offer those who might be questioning their own identities the space to see themselves.

This book is absolutely adorable and I love it so much and I can't wait to read it to my potential future offspring or my niblings or really any child I have the opportunity to read to. There is a glossary at the end, which helps somewhat, but it doesn't define 100% of the terms, and some of them are just repeated from earlier in the book.

And then there’s Steve’s totally unsubstantiated eugenics comment (which is incorrectly in quotes, by the way) that further attempts to demonize a class of people. The little vignettes inspired by each letter of the alphabet are informative and uplifting for tiny humans who are intersex or gender creative and helps normalize the queer experience in an age-appropriate way. A great reminder of how introducing these concepts to children make their understanding so much more natural and organic. I think some of the terminology might go over kids heads, but this book is just an introduction so it won't make much of a difference. The topic will likely come up in discussion at some point later on when they're older, unless they've already been exposed to unsavoury and inappropriate behaviours, or, alternatively, they have gay parents (which may require some explanation and it's simple - sometimes people like people that have the same body parts).Published in 2000, it takes a slightly different tack, not conveying LGBTQ terminology, but using the alphabet to highlight scenes from the lives of families with same-sex parents, e. L.) Webb, author of “The GayBCs,” says, “It’s the kind of book that I wish I had as a child,” he said. It's very sweet but I can see some people not enjoying it (but those people aren't made for this book anyways). Other terms relate to LGBTQ culture (about which more below), and some are words often used in relation to the LGBTQ community, but not exclusive to us, like “Ally,”“Family,” and “Equality.
