Cleverlands: The Secrets Behind the Success of the World’s Education Superpowers

I interviewed parents in every country I went to (open-ended interviews, opportunity sampling), but not enough of them to draw any general conclusions from my research alone. I'll write about the views of the individual parents I spoke to, and the impressions that teachers have about parental attitudes, but I'll draw on other research in this area too before making any sweeping statements!

Lucy has also been working as a freelance education consultant/researcher for the past three years, most recently writing a 40,000 word report on teacher career structures across the world for UNESCO (which makes the task of writing her book seem less daunting!). The academic progress of the world’s 15-year-olds is tested regularly by PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). Pupils from Finland, Japan and Shanghai consistently excel. In 2012, the UK finished near the bottom of the top third, despite relative economic strength. In footballing terms, we’re Everton. Good, but room for improvement.

If they enjoy reading and are motivated to read outside of school, they are more likely to become expert readers than those who were put off books by being forced to learn to read before they were ready. Lucy will draw on her experience researching the world’s top-performing education systems to share some surprising insights on pedagogy, the philosophy underlying their high performance, and some practical school-level strategies which schools in England can consider, taking inspiration from Finland, Japan, Canada, Singapore and Shanghai. On returning from her trip, Ms Crehan published a book – Cleverlands – recounting her findings, which was which named one of The Economist’s ‘books of the year’ within a week of its release, and has been described by Professor Dylan Wiliam as “a truly important contribution to educational scholarship”. She spent a year at Education Development Trust as part of a team advising governments on education reform, where she spent several months in Brunei working on a teacher coaching reform programme. She has also been involved in a research project on teacher career structures with IIEP UNESCO, writing a book on the existing literature and theories, and conducting case studies in Scotland and New York. Ms Crehan has advised the UK government as part of a working group on teacher workload, and spoken about her work at conferences in eight countries. She now works as a freelance education consultant and is conducting research for her second book.
