About this deal

Defy Me, the fifth instalment of the Shatter Me series, takes us on a dizzying journey as Juliette Ferrars discovers that she isn't who she thinks she is. This revelation flips her world upside down, challenging everything she believed in. It's a grueling story, with explicit torture scenes. Several times Denton is broken and signs confessions or whatever else his captors put in front of him, but each time he regathers his strength to resist again. The men around him all strive to communicate, relying on military leadership for direction. This area of abduction highlighted in this book did not encompass just Texas. The 3 Plains Indians groups took many all the way North- all the way to Colorado, most in Oklahoma.

Captured: An American Prisoner of War in North Vietnam

The personal stories compiled in this history are significant in their own right, but when they are combined with family history it becomes very compelling. Zesch does his best to combine all the disparate biographies chronologically, inserting his Uncle Adolph’s story into that timeline as accurately as he can. He draws that story from family legend and the clues sprinkled throughout other histories. So why did Uncle Adolph accept the lifestyle and beliefs of the people who kidnapped him? Why couldn’t he ever fully abandon them? Will we really ever know? Jessica wrote: "I'm really hesitant to read Room, if only because i can't believe a realistic novel could be narrated by a five year old kid. Unless I'm understanding the premise incorrectly."

Zesch explains a handful of these raids in vivid and grisly detail. Some accounts are so horrific, I hesitate to mention them here, though Zesch was meticulous in painting as accurate a picture as possible, and leaves nothing to the imagination. His goal in doing so was not to portray the Natives as savage or rabid (though that’s no doubt what most Americans believed at the time). The focus, rather, was to illustrate how Natives handled war and sought revenge, as well was proving manhood.

The sun drops into the ocean and splashes browns and reds and yellows and oranges into the world outside my window. A million leaves from a hundred different branches dip in the wind, fluttering with the false promise of flight. The gust catches their withered wings only to force them downward, forgotten, left to be trampled by the soldiers stationed just below. The ninth episode of the 2019 History Channel television series Project Blue Book, entitled "Abduction," is based on the Betty and Barney Hill UFO incident. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. The former captives spoke highly of their Indian families, and the vast majority did not want to leave them. This occurred at the time of the last Indian Wars, just before the native people were forced onto reservations and required to change their culture. Be prepared for descriptions of brutality. Also be prepared for the racism of the time, which is obvious from the newspaper quotes. This,” Warner says, spinning around so I might inspect the damage, “is not trimming the edges, you incompetent moron—” I would recommend this for middle school and up! It is a slower read, but students who are interested in the conflict in Vietnam will find this as a good addition to the pile. I’d recommend pairing it with books from other perspectives, as well, because although there is some mention of the Vietnamese perspective, it is not prominent and the American soldiers’ perspective and ideology heavily influence the way the people of Vietnam are looked at.
