About this deal

Dorset, 1933: Grace Hamblin is growing up on a beautiful rural estate. The only child of the beekeeper, she knows her place and her future—until her father dies unexpectedly and leaves her bereft and alone. Grace is indulgent because it took her years of heartache and miscarriage to conceive,” Belle reminded them. “Trixie is the longed-for only child. It’s no wonder she’s a bit spoiled.” Love is a major theme in the novel: romantic love, familial love, first love, lost love. Is it possible to be in love with two people at the same time? Do you think the characters in the book find the love they want? Poor Rufus. Each character seems to get a happy ending but him. He dies from a broken heart. Do you think this is something that is truly possible? It’s not only distasteful, Evelyn, it’s imprudent,” Sally Pearson agreed, giving her lustrous waves of long brown hair a self-conscious toss. “By throwing themselves at men they tarnish their reputations, which can never be restored.” She waved her cigarette between two manicured fingers and smiled smugly, remembering the exemplary young woman she had been. “A man needs the chase and the woman needs to be a prize worth fighting for. Girls are far too easily won these days. In our day we saved ourselves for our wedding night.” She giggled and gave a little snort. “And if we didn’t, we sure as hell didn’t let anyone know about it.”

Many thanks to Dorothy Huges of The Dirty Dogs Book Club who submitted this book—and the Reading Guide —to LitLovers. Prior to publishing any novels, she worked in London, first in public relations for the outfitters Swaine Adeney and later for the jeweller Theo Fennell. She also worked as a shop assistant in Farmacia Santa Maria Novella, the perfumery, and in events for Ralph Lauren. years after, Gracie’s daughter Trixie Valentine is also in love with a man but unexpected events split them apart. The Beekeeper’s Daughter opens with Rudyard Kipling’s “The Bee-Boy’s Song.” Why do you think Santa Montefiore chose to begin the book with this poem? How does it relate to the story? Discuss how bees play a major role throughout the book. Fast forward to 1973 and we meet Trixie, Grace's daughter. She meets a boy in a band and they fall in love, they are promising each other to be together forever.

Big wriggled in her chair like the nesting hen of her own description. “You go home now and have stern words with Trixie. Tell her she’s not to deceive you like that again. It’s important that you know where she is and who she’s with, for her safety as well as your peace of mind. You also tell her that she’s not to leave the island again for the rest of the summer and it’s nonnegotiable. You have to make it very clear, Grace. Can you do that?”

Grace and Rufus’s affair doesn’t have a resolution. If Rufus could have one more chance to see Grace, what do you think he would say to her? What do you make of Big and her friendship with Grace? Does Big give Grace good advice? Discuss Big’s role in the lives of the Valentines.

It was a lovely story about love, family and relationships, but it's also a bit of a tired cliche to put the poor worker with the rich aristocrat and moan about duty and class. I enjoyed the interactions between Grace and Rufus, but I wanted more depth.
