In late 2020, I first had the idea of giving Hoon his own novel. It was ridiculous, I knew. Here was a character so thoroughly unpleasant that even if readers enjoyed his scenes, surely they couldn’t cope with a full length novel in which he took centre stage? Surely they couldn’t actually empathise with such a man and cheer him on? All around, he is something of a DCI Kett if he was not grounded by the influence of his wife and children. The girl had been taken by a group that goes by the name “The Loop.” They are a heartless cabal that usually kidnaps girls and makes them addicts before forcing them into prostitution. Soon enough, he realized just how hard it was to break into the space and decided to opt for much smaller low-budget screenplays.
