About this deal

I knew there were forests of weed beneath the glassy cool translucent wave, and green herds that swim through rainbows from the skies . A richly atmospheric journey suffused with summer heat and occasional cabin fever, reaching its climax on the flamingo-studded inland sea of the Camargue. The story of a man, his wife and his whippet who sail their narrowboat from the Midlands to the South of France including a Channel crossing would be interesting however written but the main selling point is the author's sense of humour. The worst part of all this is that he has written a further book about his adventures in the US along the inland waterways from South Carolina to Florida and I regret to say that I'm intrigued with the idea.

He's clearly a well-read man and at times you could almost describe his style as 'stream of consciousness' but ultimately unless, like me, you share his love of canals and boating, running, beer and France, and appreciate his sense of humour, you are unlikely to enjoy this book. They took advise from nautical experts, who told them they would lose their boat and their lives (and, indeed, their whippet Jim). The humour is there in bucket loads, but I think you have to be English to understand it and even then there is no certainty that you will. All three stars are for Jim the whippet although even he comes across as slightly depressed at times! Having had quite a few narrow boat holidays on canals and enough inland sailing to be suitably terrified by the description of taking their narrow boat across the Chanel, I was able to enjoy the fears from an armchair.

The writing is as muscular and lean as its canine hero, conjuring up dawn mist or giant catfish in prose haiku before moving on to the next killer one-liner. You'll visit the France nobody knows--the backwaters of Flanders, the canals beneath Paris, and the forbidden routes to the wine-dark Mediterranean Sea.It was funny in parts and I learned something about narrow boats and whippets and a whole lot else besides.

You meet the French nobody meets – poets, captains, historians, drunks, bargees, men with guns, scholars, madmen – they all want to know the people on the painted boat and their narrow dog. She has a first class degree in French, has run thirty marathons, and can leap tall buildings with a single bound. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. A tale of travel, travail, dubious wine, a balky pump, and a boat built for only a few feet of water, this exuberantly inventive and hugely entertaining odyssey of the spirit, senses, and heart will enchant lovers of France, England, and all that lies between. The style takes a little getting used to but once you're over that, it's a fantastic read and very funny. His articulate and smart wife, the endearing whippet and the adventures had sailing the narrowboat amused me no end. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Then I strip naked, grease myself all over, and hang upside down among the ironmongery, grunting and cursing.
