David Strain, who is playing a leading role in the BMA’s COVID response, and who is researching long COVID as part of his job as a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, has witnessed this at first hand. Since the beginning of the year, Labour has been warning of looming problems with the system, even talking of “ Windrush on steroids”. But such warnings are often firmly slapped down as just being part of “project fear”. (“I find your comparisons to Windrush inappropriate,” Priti Patel, the home secretary, told the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, this month.)

This idea then helps Samra Habib build her career to the next level, wherein she conceives this project called “Just me and Allah”. The project basically is about capturing similar struggles and narratives of Queer Muslims from all over the world. Samra has traveled to diverse nations to meet people with similar struggles, to listen to their stories and to bring the stories in front of the world through her lens to assert and testify that “we have always been here”. The project further hits on the idea of homogeneity found within religion and instead brings to the table a more nuanced and layered understanding of Muslims. Have been and has been are verb constructions that are used in the present perfect tense and the present perfect progressive tense. He was surprised and confused to be told he was not British. He arrived in the UK in 1968 by plane from Jamaica. He was 14 and had come to join his mother, who had come over to become a nurse, and his father, who was working as a crane driver. “I’ve been here for almost 50 years, I’ve worked night and day, I’ve paid into the kitty – but now no one wants to help me,” he says.In Samra’s words, which best sums it up, “Queer Muslims who fear for their lives every day- while walking down the streets of Punjabi villages or meeting a potential love interest for the first time in Tehran through a dating app- might not have the tools to understand the language written by academics in Ivy League schools”. The question of spaces, of representation thus become critical in reminding the world that they have always existed!

Keep your hands clean. Wash them often. Carry a bar of soap and bottled water with you so you can easily clean your hands in locations where running water is scarce. If you don’t have soap, rinse your hands thoroughly with bottled water to get rid of any dirt, dry them, and then apply an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The process of applying had made her think about her attitudes to Britishness. “I find it difficult to know after all this time whether I feel at home here. I certainly don’t feel British, like a British person, but I have English friends … I feel in-between; I feel both. There’s a saying: the British are too polite to be honest, the Germans are too honest to be polite. I think there is something in it.” When LGBT histories and people have so often been silenced or erased, it’s even more important that, this LGBT History Month, we highlight some of the lesser known stories from our shared past. Eleanor Rykener is one such case. In 1394, Eleanor was arrested in London for being a sex worker. She had previously worked as both an embroiderer and sex worker in Oxford and London – two roles that were reserved for women at the time. Her employers have been hugely supportive, she says, and have adapted her work schedule to accommodate her needs – she has now built up to doing two days’ work per week, although she actually does it over four days.

"Being" as a Gerund

The verb phrases have been, has been, and had been all have closely related meanings. That similarity may at times lead to confusion about the right time to use each construction. One by one, German citizens stood up to voice their alarm. “It’s giving me stomach ache. I’ve been here since 1961,” one woman said, before being reassured that she simply needed to make the application, and she would be fine. (Stephanie Dawoud of the immigration charity Imix, who was translating into my ear, said most of the meetings she had attended had a similar feeling of distress, particularly among older people, who were particularly worried by the unfamiliar notion of apps and applying digitally.) A woman in her 30s was worried about whether she should transfer her business out of the country. Being is also the gerund form of be, which means that it can be used as a noun or as part of a noun phrase.

Rabbi Hugo Gryn said: “How you are with the one to whom you owe nothing is a grave test.” At the moment, Britain is failing that test, especially in its press coverage. As the daughter of Polish Jewish postwar asylum seekers, I’m stupefied by how the collective memory can be so short, bigotry so unabashed, and how, with all the recent interest in the Holocaust, basic connections can fail to be made. Are we doomed always to stigmatise the Other, or are these the last bleatings of the little Englander? Must compassion only ever be extended after the event? The word "being" can also be a gerund, which is a type of noun. In this use, it has a meaning similar to "existing." For example: The most compelling proof is the Mori survey on public attitudes to refugees carried out for Reader’s Digest in November 2000. This found that - after a year in which the Daily Mail had run more than 200 stories about asylum seekers and refugees - 80% of adults believed that refugees come to Britain because they regard it as a “soft touch”, 66% thought there are too many immigrants in Britain, and 63% considered too much is being done to help immigrants. These opinions mirror those of the tabloids. In today’s review we will discuss the differences among the phrases so you can use each one correctly when you are speaking or writing. When and How to Use Have Been or Has BeenCurrent bigotry against asylum seekers, it’s chilling to discover, closely mimics prewar anti-Jewish sentiments, and in both instances has been legitimised by British immigration policy. Rather than relaxing entry requirements for Austrian Jews after the Anschluss - Germany’s annexation of Austria in March 1938 - the British government tightened them, introducing new, strictly controlled visas precisely to restrict their numbers. More than 65,000 Austrian Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.

Prior to COVID, I was already working on chronic fatigue syndrome, and pre-COVID it was very, very difficult to get anyone to take an interest in either research, or data evaluation or to do studies into chronic fatigue syndrome, in the UK at least. I put grant applications in to do work into the underlying causes of CFS, pre-COVID, and they were commonly side-lined as low priority; now exactly the same grant applications are being funded. On the helpline, after much time listening to jangly hold music, the Home Office helper was both polite and honest, but had no answer as to why the app was not reading the digital code. She was advised to seek out one of the 80 designated EU settlement scheme scanning offices (in council offices and town hall register offices) where the passport could be scanned manually. Samra Habib spent her early years in Pakistan, born to Ahmadi Muslims parents, a sect that has faced denouncement and continues to remain a target for religious persecution due to their differing beliefs from the general Islamic preaching. While that identity traps Samra in one way, the process of coming to terms with her queerness is another facet which complicates her identity in a society wherein homosexuality is still a crime. His concerns are echoed by Chai Patel of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, who warns that the scheme is set up to be easy for people who are “wealthy, well-educated people”. He is concerned at the absence of a physical document proving status. “The scheme is very easy if you know your rights, you’re online and you’re bolshie enough to be able to stand up for what you’re entitled to. It won’t work so well for the more vulnerable. We are expecting hundreds of thousands of people to be left without status if the scheme continues as it is,” he said. This almost flurry of research into long COVID contrasts with the experience of many with ME/CFS, who often have felt ignored or misunderstood by the medical profession. But for some, the interest in long COVID is an opportunity to learn more about the longer-term consequences of viral infections – which could, in time, also benefit people with ME/CFS. As the past participle, been is the form of be used in the present perfect ( has been) and past perfect ( had been) verb tenses.
