The book, released on October 2 of that year, [48] earned McFarlane a place in the Guinness World Records, for which McFarlane was given a certificate on October 5, 2019 at the New York Comic Con, prior to his panel, "The Road to Historic Spawn 300 and 301. Spawn is notable for being one of only two Image books that debuted during the company's 1992 launch, along with Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon, that continued to be published into the 2020s. As Spider-Man swings across the city, he feels reinvigorated and wishes that his wife could experience the experience for herself, and figures maybe one day she will. I see that in a few places in this book, only because those panels from the original comics are burned into my brain. Taking on both writing and art duties, McFarlane ushered Peter Parker into a gritty new era — and it began with “Torment”!

The comic was initially written by Kirkman, penciled by Ryan Ottley, and inked by McFarlane, with Greg Capullo providing layouts. After all, the handful of comic books I would have read as a child came from that era, and it undoubtedly colours my perception of the time.It is gleefully silly, and McFarlane and Michelinie acknowledge that without undermining their work on the character.

After taking a beating from Doctor Octopus to save the city, Peter muses, “To the rest of the world, I was a loser today, just a clown in a costume. In some collections, they’ll force a blank page or put something extra in somewhere to accomodate double page spreads in this fashion. Whereas it had essentially been rendered as a series of Xs between two lines, McFarlane embellished it by detailing far more individual strands, which came to be dubbed "spaghetti webbing".His plotting is similarly strong, pitting the web-slinger against a selection of foes and scenarios that feel true to Spider-Man as a whole while enabling McFarlane to layer horror into his superheroism – as he would do to a much greater extent with Spawn. It’s something you probably wouldn’t ever think about until you crack open this book and see it start happening. Although nineties artwork tends to be much-maligned in comic book fandom these days, I have to admit a fondness for the early work of Todd McFarlane and Jim Lee. The next year, McFarlane would join Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Liefeld, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino to found Image and launch Spawn. However, she pricks her finger and bleeds into a chalice, causing the beat to begin again and the Lizard to rise again.
