Keeping on the subject of power, the Nikon Z 50 doesn’t feature a USB Type C interface like you get on Nikon’s full frame Z-series models, though it does facilitate in-camera charging via its Micro USB port at the side. The Center-weighted and Spot modes are obsolete static modes from the 1970s. Nikon leaves them in to satiate old-tymers, and the only time I see people with exposure problems is when someone actually uses these old modes, but doesn't know and apply the Zone System which is required to use these properly, as we did in the 1970s.

Like the Z6 and Z7, the Z50 has a pair of custom function buttons in fingertip reach, to the right of the lens mount. These can be set to a series of toggle, hold or hold-and-scroll functions, as can a number of other buttons on the body. The options include direct control to whichever menu option you've placed at the top of the camera's 'My Menu' tab, which provides an excellent degree of customization for a camera like this. The Z50 is Nikon's first APS-C mirrorless camera. It's a miniature Z7 or Z6 with a smaller sensor, but the same lens mount, and adds a built-in flash and superior ergonomics. With my Z50 I get the same fantastic image quality as I've always loved from my Nikons, with less ergonomic hassles between me and my picture than with my Nikon Z7 or Z6.

To keep the body size down, three functions (DISP, Mag + and Mag –) are operated by tapping the edge of the touchscreen, rather than by physical buttons. These options are printed on, rather than being part of the LCD display, and hence can't be reconfigured. They take a bit of getting used-to, but are responsive and work pretty well. But the confusing question may be: What device(s) can I use to charge my camera’s battery while it’s in-camera? When it comes to ergonomics, Nikon shooters will feel right at home with the Z50. First of all, the grip of the camera is deep and very comfortable, especially when comparing it to other cameras like Sony A6400, Fuji X-T30 and Canon EOS M6 II. And despite the big size of the Z-mount, Nikon left plenty of room between the mount and the grip to make the camera comfortable even for those with larger hands. Similar to other Nikon DSLRs, the grip is covered with textured rubber, providing great comfort when using the camera for extended periods of time. Please note that the above table primarily compares key camera specifications and does not take into account the camera system as a whole. If I were to base the above comparison on things like lens/accessory selection, ergonomics and camera menu system, I would place Fuji as the #1 choice for me personally, followed by Sony and Canon. Why Fuji? Because it is the only manufacturer in the group that created a truly appealing line-up of high-performance lenses that are specifically designed for the camera mount and sensor size. Sony has a wider selection of lenses available, but that’s if you take into account its full-frame (FE) lenses. Canon mostly has slow zoom lenses in its EF-M lens line-up.Since the finder sets its brightness mostly based on the light coming through the lens, I often point my Nikon Z50 at the sky just before I hit the PLAY button to brighten the finder display.
