Our 300 Series Bristol paper is a popular choice among many artists because of the quality paper at a very reasonable price. It comes in a number of pad sizes, loose sheets, and large rolls. It is a 'bristol weight' at 100lb. (270gsm), and is perfect for finished art. Look for it in smooth and vellum surfaces.

The best way to get smooth color with colored pencils is by careful layering. It doesn’t matter what you’re drawing, or what pencils or paper you use. Draw each layer so carefully that the color needs little or no blending. For the smoothest color, use light pressure through several layers. What paper do pencil artists use? The textured Bristol paper, known as vellum, is a good choice if you are working with oil, pastels, crayons, pencils, or graphite, and charcoal. Mediums like graphite will adhere well to the texture. When it comes to choosing a brand of Bristol paper, Strathmore Bristol paper comes out at the top. In 2005, Charlene completed her Wellness Diplomas in Therapeutic Aromatherapy and Reflexology from the International School of Reflexology and Meridian Therapy. She worked for a company offering corporate wellness programs for a couple of years, before opening up her own therapy practice. It was in 2015 that a friend, who was a digital marketer, asked her to join her company as a content creator, and this is where she found her excitement for writing. There is some texture or tooth, which helps grab onto things like the graphite. There are also two more finishes that some brands offer. Strathmore is the brand that stands out most for the best Bristol paper. Creating details and fine lines. The textured surface is good for graphite, charcoal, pastel, and colored pencilsThe semi-smooth Bristol paper options have an in-between texture which is not too smooth and yet not too rough. The texture is very slight, making it perfect if you choose to do your art with markers, pens, ink, or pencils.

Plate Bristol Paper: This is an extremely smooth and even finish, that is achieved using a particular process using steel rollers and immense pressure. This type of surface is great for markers, ink, air-brushing as well as mechanical layouts. Bristol board is generally more lightweight when compared to illustration board and is used for art pieces that you want to preserve. In some cases, an illustration board can be used for creating artwork that will later be reproduced on another type of media. Daler-Rowney Smooth Paper pads feature ideal papers for drawing and sketching. Available in a range of weights, each paper is suitable for all dry techniques and pen and ink work, with the heavyweight papers also supporting light watercolour work. How do you get a smooth finish with colored pencils?Vellum surfaces are great for graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, pastel, and crayon. The surface has peaks and valleys which grab dry media such as graphite. More even shading and deeper tones can be achieved on a vellum surface. The most well-known and easily available brand is Strathmore Bristol paper. However, you can also get Bristol paper from Canson, Koh-I-Noor, Neenah amongst others.

The term Bristol derives from the early days of European papermaking when mills would send their finest papers to Bristol, England to be pasted together. Bristol papers generally have two types of surfaces: smooth and vellum. You may think a Bristol sketchbook or pad is the same thing as an illustration board, but there is a difference, and that difference is in the design. Bristol board can be used on both sides while illustration board is simply mounted paper, usually, this means it is not possible to use both sides. Smooth surfacesare great for pen & ink, mechanical pencil, airbrush, and markers. There is little to no tooth, making these surfaces great for creating fine lines, detail drawings, or marker drawings. Some brands that manufacture Bristol sketchbooks and Bristol board paper include Neenah, Canson, and Koh-I-Noor. One of the most popular and well-known brands of Bristol paper pads is Strathmore Bristol paper. Strathmore Bristol paper sketchbooks come in a variety of sizes, too. Here are the papers I use for graphite and colored pencil, as well as pen and ink. For graphite drawing I use smooth bristol. This comes in many brands, surfaces, and sizes. It can be found in pads and single sheets. What paper do professional artists use? Semi-Smooth Bristol Paper: This paper is somewhere between the smooth and rougher texture. There is only a very slight texture, which makes it great for pencils, markers, pens, and ink Watercolor paper is always the best choice for watercolor mediums. That said, vellum Bristol paper texture is quite similar to watercolor paper and many artists successfully paint watercolor on Bristol of this variety. You also need to consider the right paper texture for your colored pencils. Most people will prefer a smooth texture (also called hot press, plate or fine-grain), which allows for detailed work and easy blending. Is Bristol paper good for pencil drawing?

Regular Bristol paper texture is smooth and most often used for detailed drawings. Bristol vellum is not to be confused with the more translucent drafting paper vellum. Bristol vellum is rougher in texture, somewhat similar to cold-pressed watercolor paper. For detailed artist drawings, we recommend using a smooth paper, such as Bristol board, Strathmore toned pads, Hot Press Watercolour Paper or textured Pastelmat. Polychromos Pencils adhere to many rough surfaces too, such as wood, stone, leather and metal. Can you use colored pencils on Bristol paper? Airbrush markers, pencil artwork, and pen drawings look beautiful on smooth Bristol paper as it has almost no texture at all. This makes it the ideal paper for very detailed artwork and thin, fine lines. The paper’s amazingly smooth and silky texture is achieved thanks to the finishing process in the factory which uses steel rollers and extreme pressure.

Bristol board paper is made in two finishes, these are smooth and vellum. These two finishes are perfect for all kinds of dry as well as wet media. This makes Bristol paper a great surface for things like mixed media art as well as collages. However, it is also good for those who only wish to use a single medium. The smooth surface finish is excellent for ink and pen drawings, and airbrushing markers, and pencils. There is little to no tooth or texture, which is why it is best suited for more detailed orientated drawings, and for creating fine lines.
